A Review of the Wine of the Month Club

I, with my husband enrolled to a wine of the month club, thanks to the couple that chose to stay with us on a weekend who extended the invitation to join the club. I think it as a wonderful gift of courtesy. Ever since joining the club, we receive two bottles of wine every month. My husband doesn't care about wine and he asks me what to do with that much wine. I found a solution to the problem. I decided to use my membership at a club of different kind, a book club to make the most of the sample wine bottle I would receive from the wine club.

I met the members of the book club at a meeting and told them about the wine I get from the 'wine of the month' club. Till then it is not a problem finishing off the wine. We picked a book on wine making, wine testing, wine sampling and stories of people related to wine making and serving industry. We are book club members, you see. The next meeting of the book club was planned at my home. By the time the meeting materialized, I had some unique bottles of wine. We discussed the book (really!) while sampling the wine. It was a nice thing to see wine of the month club was mentioned in the book. Now tell me what should I call the meeting - wine of the month meeting or book club meeting?

I agree it was the loudest book club meeting we ever had. Different sampling wine glasses were emptied at regular intervals. It was great fun for everyone. Was it wine of the month club that added fun and value to our book club meeting or is it the other way round? It doesn't matter till we have something for our intellect and for our tongue as well.

The membership fee to the wine of the month club is quite reasonable and most of the book club members joined the club as a group. It is nice that the hostess always something unique for the guests, even in the form of wines. Some of the wines are great tasting while I don't really like all of them. It doesn't matter - there will always be takers for the tastes that I personally dislike. It is only natural for us to note which wines perform well on our tongues and which one doesn't. We will be purchasing the ones that raised some prolific cheers.

Wine Reviews For Your Reading Pleasure

A Guide to Wine Cellar Racks

Wine Cellar Racks
Wine Cellars and Racks for the Home

Wine cellar racks allow the wine enthusiast to have a professional looking cellar right in their own home. A wine cellar rack is most often a wall mounted or stackable wine rack unit. It can hold from 10 to 100's of bottles depending upon your individual need and with space in mind; they are also customizable. Wine cellars and racks for the home allow the individual wine lover to convert any space in their home into an instant cellar in a matter of moments.

Wine bottles need to have proper storage to ensure that the wine maintains optimal flavor and wine cellar racks provide this storage. Anyone with an interest in wine should know that the proper and more convenient way to store wine bottles is on their sides. By using a wine cellar rack, bottles either are individually or grouped together on their sides in cubicles. This arrangement is necessary for several reasons. First, by storing the bottle on its side, the sediments that settle out of the wine over time are more evenly distributed and help the wine keep most of the desired original flavor. In addition, the label and corks are better preserved.

Wine cellars and racks for the home are inexpensive. They are easy to assemble, come with detailed, easy to understand instructions, and all the necessary hardware and they are durable. They come in a wide range in size, styles, colors, and are composed of various materials. Wine cellars and racks for the home are really more convenient than just keeping those few bottles on the pantry shelf. They actually take up more space being upright, then if properly stored on their side in on of our small wine cellar racks.

Wine cellar racks are no longer just for the winery or commercial entity. Although cellar racks can easily accommodate these larger consumers, the individual wine connoisseur can also benefit from a wine cellar and rack for the home. By purchasing customizable units, cellar racks for wine can be placed in almost any location available, from that junk closet to a conventional cellar.

Understand Wine and Your Health

During the 1990s, a physician voiced on the television show "Sixty Minutes" that drinking red wine reduces heart disease. He cited the relatively lower levels of the disease in France despite their ever so famously high fat diets. Since that program, it seems that red wine health effects have been on the forefront of the wine consumers mind.

Good for the Heart

Coronary artery disease is caused by a build up of cholesterol in the arteries that supply the blood to the heart. If the arteries get partially blocked the heart cannot get enough oxygen and the result is pain. Does red wine protect against heart disease?

Many studies suggested that moderate amount of red wine (one to two glasses a day) lowers the risk of heart attack for middle aged people by 30 to 50 percent. It was also concluded that red wine may prevent additional heart attacks if you have already suffered from one.

The cholesterol that blocks these arteries is called low density lipo-protein or referred to as the bad cholesterol. This is cleared from the blood by high density lipo-proteins or the good cholesterol. Moderate wine consumption produces a better balance of these two. Additionally, wine has an anti-coagulation effect which makes the blood less likely to clot.

Red Wines

Chemical and food experts have known for years that wine contains rich deposits of vitamins, minerals, and natural sugars that are often beneficial to good health. Wine is also rich in potassium and low in sodium. Red wines have more of these elements due to the juices longer contact with the grape skins. Red wines are also rich in Vitamin B which comes from the grape skins as well.

Wine and Digestion

Wine aids in the production and flow of gastric juices. This facilitates digestion by breaking down the food in the stomach quickly and effectively. For many, after the age of 50 our bodies do not produce enough hydrochloric acid that are needed for digestion. So many doctors, including my own, have suggested a glass or two of wine with a meal. Who am I to complain?

Wine also has a tranquil effect on the body and helps people who have trouble sleeping. And it does not stop there as it may help lower the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimers disease.

Wine and Calories

As of now, there is no such thing as a diet wine. Unfortunately, there is no getting away from the fact that wine contains calories and calories make you fat if you do not burn them up. A glass of white or red wine contains around 100 calories. Sweeter wines that contain residual sugar as well as alcohol have more calories.

Final Thoughts

When you put everything together you may decide that a little bit of wine does you some good. Wine certainly has its place in a healthy lifestyle. That is my conclusion, and I am sticking with it!

Riedel Sommelier Single Malt Scotch Glass (1)

The Riedel Sommelier Single Malt Scotch Glass brings forward the pure malt character of whiskies concentrating their aromas and accentuating their softness roundness and silkiness. The small slightly out-turned lip directs the spirit onto the tip of the tongue where sweetness is perceived and serves to bring out the elegant creaminess of a top-quality single malt. A far superior glass for drinking fine whiskies than traditional spirits tumblers (subtle aromas of the whisky are lost) and brandy balloons (emphasize the alcohol at the expense of finesse). Recommended for: Single Malt Whisky Malt Whisky Whisky/Whiskey 4 1/2'H 7 oz. Attention California residents. Proposition 65 WARNING.

Choosing The Right Pair Of Wine And Cheese

Wine and cheese parties from the seventies are returning. They are easy to set up. You don?t need a reason for the party. They can be brought together at any time, no matter the weather and there is nothing like the pairing of cheese with wine.

Most people can get overwhelmed. To begin with there are a wide range of choices in wines and cheese. Then there is figuring out what wine goes with what cheese.

The first thing to remember when you set about buying your supplies is never by cheap boxed wine. It may be easy to open but the flavors of cheese or any other food cannot be brought out with cheap wine.

Remember strong wines go with strong cheese and mild cheeses go with mild wine. Neither drink nor food must dominate. The flavor of each bite of cheese on your palette is replaced with a sip of the wine.

Wines that are acidic complement pungent cheese such as Chardonnay with Brie or a Savignon Blanc with goat cheese.A soft cheese like Camembert goes well with sweet wines like Vouvray or Chenin Blanc. And hard cheeses like Parmegiano, Romana or Regiano are wonderfully matched to full bodied red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Red Zinfandel and Red Bordeaux.Sweet wines like Vermouth , Port or Sherry may be combined with the a the well known, much loved cheddar cheese. If the cheddar is aged then its sharp taste compliments an equally tangy glass of Shiraz Cabernet.

Remember, that the best guide of what cheese and wine combinations to go for, you should rely on your tastes. If it seems to work together then serve them together. Don?t worry about the errors you make, they will only help improve your abilities in the long run.

Phoenix Napa Sangiovese Blood of Jupiter

People that know great Sangiovese love the Phoenix "Blood of Jupiter" wine. We used longer skin contact during fermentation than we have in the past with this variety (up to 23 days total), which helped capture the essence of the grape by extracting more color and other compounds from the grape skins. These options were made possible due to a growing season that provided grapes which were almost perfectly ripened when finally harvested. A slightly shorter barrel aging period with this vintage helped to capture the intensity of the fruit characters. Jeff Morgan of the Wine Spectator wrote "Bright raspberry, cherry, and spice flavors lead the way in this juicy, fruity wine, which is tempered nicely by herbal notes, good acidity and firm tannins...Fun to drink". We had thought that producing some matter on Bronco Wine would be an impossibility. However, once we started, there was no turning back.

Today's Bronco Wine Article

Wine Storage Tips

Once the clear wine has been bottled and you intend to keep it for more than three months, it is important to realize that corks dry out. When this happens, the shrinkage could cause the sealing-wax to crack, causing tiny air holes to appear and wild yeast & bacteria could attack the wine.

All bottles fitted with ordinary corks or cork-lined screw caps should always be stored on their sides. This allows for the wine to keep the cork moist (which prevents shrinkage). Rubber-banded screw-stopper bottles may be stored upright.

Knowing that wine should be stored throughout the year at a certain, constant temperature, many people go to much trouble and dream up all sorts of ingenious devices to achieve that end. Authorities are divided in their opinions as to the ideal temperature in which wines should be stored. This is most likely due to the fact that wines (like human beings) like what suits them best. Perhaps there is an ideal temperature for certain types of wine, but what suits the Eskimo does not suit the Australian aborigine, and this will likely never change.

In any case, the aborigine and the Eskimo get changes in temperature and no harm comes to them. In fact, they seem to thrive on it. So why not let us think of our wines as being something like ourselves in that they are quite at home in the temperatures that we give them?

Rapid changes are best avoided. Of course, (as with human beings), if we can store our wines on a stone floor, all the better! If this is not possible, a cupboard on the north side of a building will do provided a chimney does not run through it.

A friend of mine stores three hundred bottles of some really magnificent wines in an attic which becomes very hot in the summer and nearly freezes in the winter. However, no harm ever comes to any of his wines. So, store your wines anywhere you can and don't worry.

When serving home-made wines, remember that they are best when served at room temperature. Champagnes should be served cellar-cool or iced.
